"I was intimidated by you" means I'm giving the other person the power of intimidating me. Cue the tiny grasshopper playing the violin while I go all Woe Iz Meeeee.

"I allowed myself to be intimidated" changes the power structure.

By taking responsibility for my intimidation, it opens the door for me to figure out WHY I was intimidated.

That's when I can start addressing the real issues.
