I love this guy and his demystifying of cats.

I think we're doing the litter boxes correctly.

In our house, we have 3 main room cats and 4 litter boxes (and two other cats that come out to play periodically, but they have their own permanent space). The litter boxes are pretty much in the living areas, but off enough that we aren't tripping over them. Two are dome encased and two are open tubs. They get used about equally as much. I wondered, when we set out all these boxes, if there would be a clear winner between the covered and non-covered boxes, but they're all about tied. I think they're pick based on closeness/convenience and smell.

One cat never covers up, so either another cat or one of us human-folk will eventually take care of it. Another cat ALWAYS turns around and has his front paws on the litter box so that he's facing out no matter what. This actually turned into an incident the other day while Eileen and I were in the foyer looking at the lanterns she had brought home. The litter box tipped over onto my foot while he was doing his balancing act. I felt bad that his "toilet" decided to attack him while he was minding his own business. If that somehow originally started because he was watching out for others sneaking up on him, he now has to consider that his box might also be coming to get him. Poor thing.
