They've been around for a few years now, but I only just heard of these thanks to a "Best Road Trips" article.

"That is totally awesome." - How it's made...

Lancaster, CA - with full lane strips, it reminds me of Guitar Hero played via automobile

Williams Tell Overture at various speeds

Okinawa has the best tune (although it's hard to hear in the video)

These remind me of a little spot on 635 eastbound in Dallas as you approach the bridge over I-35. Every time I go over that spot I get a brief moment of where the road changes grade slightly and I hear a higher pitched "tone" for only a half-second. Once I recognized that it always made that change in sound I began looking forward to hearing it every time I drove over it, and I tend to point it out when I have passengers in the car. I'm going to be sad when the road work being done in that area eventually forces the repaving of that spot.

Also, I know the idea of these musical grooves is to entice people to drive the speed limit, but wouldn't they still make sounds at higher speeds, sounding like a record being played at the wrong speed? That sounds like an enticement to drive even faster, much like hearing your voice change is an enticement to huff on a helium balloon.
