Gonna Hurt Tomorrow
First I kidnapped them to go run errands with me. We hit Japanese Grill for a sushi lunch, which they felt good about overall, but only so-so on the food. They do this thing wherein they "feel" off of each other regarding how they should think about liking the food, despite having stated they like it to begin with. I'm sure if I looked around for the article again I'd find it, but it reminds me of how when people make guesses without input they are closer to the truth and their answers vary wildly, but when they start comparing notes, not only do their answers start to match up more, they average further from the truth than without peer congealment.
We hit the bank ATM, but it was out of service. We hit the library to drop off some movies, only to discover one wasn't in the case, and they say they never watched it, so I may have ended up buying a movie that I neither want nor have. We hit Best Buy to rescue my mom's laptop from The Geek Squad after its hard drive failed, which was beyond my level of geek ability to fix. We hit Jo-Ann so I could pick up thread and a needle for learning tatting - they found some other kids and ran around the building with them playing with rubber rifles and swords while us adults rolled our eyes and continued shopping. We hit Pho Hung and met up with some roommies and a friend for mid-afternoon boba teas.
I took them to downtown Fort Worth to go to the Main Street Arts Festival and kept it a secret the whole time as to where we were going and what we were doing. During the drive they tried to guess and one of those guesses was ice skating. That would have been possible a few years ago, but unless I'm mistaken the ice rink in downtown has closed - I know the mall that was previously associated with it closed. Then they guessed roller skating, because their minds had attached to the general concept. We ended up spending more time in traffic, looking for a parking space, and then walking to it than we actually spent in the festival proper. They were ridiculously lackluster about it. There was even a bribe for getting cotton candy until they saw how long the line for tickets was and then how long the line for the food was. In a way, I wasn't disappointed. So, once we reached the car, I gave in.
We went roller skating.
I hadn't been skating in probably 20 years and was plenty wobbly for the first 30min or so until I started getting back into my rhythm. My body happily let me know which muscle groups were still weak from lack of use, especially my core. We were there for a couple hours at least. My ankles and calves are sore, and I have one good-sized blister on the bottom of my foot. If I had planned for skating, I would have had much thicker socks, like twice as think at minimum. I took one major tumble as well while dodging a slower kid that suddenly turned into my path when I was going at a fairly high speed. That not only scraped and bruised the crap out of my knee, but anyone watching would have seen not just a fall, but a full tumbling over of a couple good rolls. I learned how to not brace myself for those. The tumbles look like they would hurt more, but in fact mitigate the pressures and forces that would otherwise cause a sprain or fracture. Considering I've had 2 fractures from skating as a kid, I can state this like I'm a pro at it or something. Pro at falling - yep that's me.
Great workout. I think I'll have to take the boys much more often.
We got home with some fast food at about 10pm and watched The Crow. Afterwards I told them about Brandon Lee.
It was a good play date. Now that I'm home, ice, ibuprofen, and maybe a couple swigs of whiskey would be a good prescription (just to prove that I can be an adult with my pride intact after such a tumbling), but I'm worn out and tired. Ibuprofen, check, but otherwise I'm heading to bed to sleep like a rock hopefully.
