OMG, today is going to be such a good day.

Now, that's saying something coming from me, because of the mood I've been in recently. That's also saying something considering I found out my friend's grandmother passed away yesterday. My heart goes out to him. He's going through the same exact thing I went through two years ago, and that another friend went through about this same time last year with her father's passing. There's a lot of sadness, but also a lot of relief when someone you love no longer has to suffer their illness.

In a way, that's kind of how I feel about today. This week with old friends has been good for me, and the weather change is so much of a relief in and of itself. This summer has been associated with some very bad emotions and remembrances for me. It felt like a trial by fire - almost literally. Fall hitting right now feels like a cooling baptism. I'm definitely in fall cleaning mode. My room's a mess, and my head's been even more of a mess. Time to clean it all out again.

Oh, and it's Little Bit's b-day, and again they want Mongolian. I hope the owner-dude is there today so the boys can see him.

I was reminded of another hobby that I really wanted to take an interest in when I was much younger - paper roll art. Now, that particular image is actually toilet paper roll cores, but the type of art it produces is similar. What I'm actually referring to is tiny, tiny, TINY slivers of paper that are coiled up and shaped into images. I'm Googling (I love that that's an active verb) for it, but it keeps giving me miniature toilet paper roll art, which admittedly is pretty cool unto itself, but not exactly what I'm looking for (although, Squeeeeee).

Oh, and that last image reminds me - I have ALWAYS loved doing origami. I bought myself a 2014 daily-page origami calendar again. I say again, because I had one years ago. I was pretty tempted to also get the kirigami calendar, and the tiny planes calendar, but I decided one calendar should be my limit. My ex-boyfriend from my early 20's used to make the origami cranes all the time. He would make them at the restaurants and leave them on top of the tip money he would leave behind. I thought it was cute that he did that, but I swear I got so sick and tired of seeing those damn things everywhere. I think I'm going to get some string and a lot of thumb tacks and hang my little origami creations from the ceiling in my office.

Oh, FFS, why did I have to click on the Puzzles link at the top of the page??? WAAAAAAAAANT. Want, want, want, want, want, mmm, that looks tasty, want, want, kinda want, neat, would be nice if it wasn't the frou-frou side of antiques, but the tarnished and patina side instead, and want. I mean, seriously - I have 12 unopened jigsaw puzzles in my closet, and the one puzzle Kevin got me for my birthday is only half-done, as I didn't finish it on July 4th, so it's half done in the box on the bookshelf in the living room. It's hard to work on puzzles when your card table is covered with other stuff. That's why I REALLY want a dedicated bedroom for all of my arts and crafts and other projects.

HAHAHAHA - This one is listed as a "Classic." I've had the original of that puzzle since I was a teen, and it's my favorite to put together on a regular basis. I've gotten it down to ~1-2 hours. Most pieces I pick up and instantly put right about where I know they will go in the final image even without any other pieces around it. It's a shadow box. You'll note the ceiling "tiles" are playing cards, the checkered wooden floor is actually two checker boards, and the pot bellied stove to the far right is a hand grenade.

Uh, where was I ... Oh, yeah, looking for tiny slivers of paper rolled up into things that look a lot like macrame owls and such. Speaking of macrame, I used to LOVE making friendship bracelets out of DMC as well as plastic lanyards. That was one of the results of living at Camp Carter for 5 summers in a row. I tended to walk around all the time even after summer had ended with either bags of string or skeins of plastic string in a tiny suitcase that previously housed all of my leathercrafting tools. (Yet ANOTHER hobby I used to be really into, and that little suitcase had about as many tools as seen in that image. I spent a good amount of money for an elementary-aged kid on that hobby before moving on to rocket building and friendship bracelets due to my camp involvement.) So, it's kind of strange that I don't actually like the old 70's type macrame stuff. It just looks annoying to me. And fuck those damned owls. WHO WHO decided to make 10,000 macrame owls?!? Okay, now something like this I could easily get behind. I could see using the right materials and patterns and making some really interesting jewelry that would easily capture the attention of certain crowds. And I'll be the first to admit, these are fucking impressive, I'd even pay money for this. And, uh, look, a link to leatherworked pool cue cases from there. Also, WOW. Maybe I should have kept with the leatherworking hobby after all.

So, the tiny paper art came about when my grandmother's brother and his wife passed away and she inherited their house. In one of the closets were all these little strands of rolled up paper and a couple books on the art. I spent more than a few hours in that closet playing with that stuff. Yes, I mean IN the closet, although usually with the door open, but for some reason I really liked that space. So, it was my dead great aunt-in-law that got me turned on to that. Go figure.

FINALLY!!! - and, and, and, Totally much more interesting than what I figured I'd find right off the bat. (I'm still annoyed that this is such a difficult art form to search for. I still don't have a name for it to go by.)

Lastly - WOW - what a fascinating website! Yes, please. That would totally be a wall in a reading room for me.

EDIT: A-fucking-Ha! It's called paperolle or quilling. (That took all morning and lots of round-about winding through side-web-surfings to find.)

See what I mean about the fucking macrame-look-alike owls?

See, now this is more of the direction I would take the tiny paper art. Oooh, pretty. Not shabby, but not my style. This grey-tone piece is beautiful. Fun and awesome, rolled into one. (I know, bad punny again.) This chick is pretty amazing. Nifty. This reminds me of the current coffee/art deco/French wall art that's popular right now.

It's amazing how searching for paperolle gives dull brown religious paraphernalia, but searching for quilling gives colorful fishies and tiny watch faces. (Watch out, she might actually be Coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs.) Quilled Fabergé egg - need I say more?

If I were to get into this, I'd be doing Halloween stuffs, because they're cool.

Or maybe stick with what I know best - Fractals! (That's so very close to a fractal Julia set, it makes a great representation.)
