The Human Comedy
This article (from JDack) reminded me of a section of the book I read recently.
"Why is Homer working?" he said.
The two girls sat by patiently, waiting for Mrs. Macauley's answers to the child's questions.
"Your brother Homer is working," she said, "because your brother Marcus is in the Army. Because we must have money with which to buy food and clothing and pay rent - and to give to others whose need is greater than ours."
"Who?" Ulysses said.
"Anybody," Mrs. Macauley said. "The poor, for instance."
"Who're the poor?" the boy said.
"Everybody," Mrs. Macauley said, smiling to herself.
Ulysses tried hard to stay awake, but it was no longer possible.
"You must remember," she said, "always to give, of everything you have. You must give foolishly even. You must be extravagant. You must give to all who come into your life. Then nothing and no one shall have the power to cheat you of anything, for if you give to a thief, he cannot steal from you, and he himself is then no longer a thief. And the more you give, the more you will have to give."
