Imagine a software program specifically designed to do nothing but follow millions upon millions of simultaneous Tweets.
That software program would have "known" that there was an earthquake in Canada, and probably would have been able to make a pretty accurate educated guess as to it's magnitude and epicenter well before the seismologists.
All the singularity needs is 1)proper programming for interpreting the data (prerequisite: noticing strong patterns in the data stream), and 2)immediate access to that data.
Oh wait, #2 is already taken care of, considering that Twitter is free to follow via the internet.
I have GOT to get into programming. Anyone have a (recent) Cray lying around that they'd like to donate to the cause?
