So when I find something that's also simple and basic and meets my needs I jump on it. And then I hold on to it. And then it gets broken. And then I can't find a replacement for it that meets the needs of still being simple and basic.

*sigh*

My nephew broke the lid to my tea kettle. It just means that it no longer whistles, but that was the major appeal for my tea kettle. It is tiny (1-1.25 qt., can't remember exact size), simple silver with black handle, a little lid that you have to lift to make the whistle stop and to pour the water, and the handle swivels the fuck out of the way and then stays out of the way while you fill the basin. At under $20 it was an absolute steal for me when I purchased it a few years back.

It's still perfectly usable for its purpose of heating water, but I have on occasion been known to "set it and forget it" which puts a lot of importance on that kettle whistle. Besides, my whole point to purchasing it was in fact to be able to experience that old fashioned whistle sound when my water was ready. I can boil water in a pan or run it through the coffee machine just fine, and by all means, a tea kettle really is just a little added stove trinket taking up space and being in the way of a burner when you're trying to cook a 10 course meal. But it's my tea kettle and I love it and I miss that whistle noise, especially now as we get into winter and I beef up my hot tea and chocolate drinking tendencies.

Now, searching the webbers for a replacement, I am confronted with fancy, expensive monstrosities. Since when did boiling water become non-eco-friendly? My parents have something like this, and while it meets my simplicity and whistling requirements, it's just too big for my preference and you have to hold the lid open while filling the basin - and I hate having to fill from the pour spout. When I do find a nice simple kettle, the damn handle doesn't swivel or there's just something odd about it's shape that bugs me. Like this one. Seriously...WTF IS THAT???

I have the same problem with shopping for shoes. Apparently I'm so simple that I'm difficult. Go figure.

Check thrift stores? I got mine there. It doesn't have most of the fancy features you mention, but it does whistle. Course, it also has to be filled via the pour spout, but there quite probably will be something else there that will meet your needs.

Hurray for old-fashioned, SMALL, whistling tea kettles!

Also, that pig totally bothers me - because that is not a fucking kettle. But my dad has a teapot in the shape of a diner car, so I guess I'll live (the diner is even more monstrous than the pig). Still, though - can't you just see the moron who decides to put THAT on to boil their water in? NO. IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.

I got a functioning "silver" tea kettle with a black whistling lid that stays down or up when you want it. Plain black handle. $4.99 at IKEA. I've used it for two years now with no problems, no complaints.
