Ok, I've given up searching, so now I'm asking and I truly believe that at least one of you will know the answer to this.

I'm trying to recall the name of an old (70's or most likely 80's) movie in which a giant, seemingly smart rat has invaded a man's home. His wife and daughter go on vacation visit the grandmother and he begins the exterminating process. Oh wait, scratch that. The man becomes psychotically obsessed with getting rid of this rat which he knows is taunting him because this is a special designer rat.

So the entire movie is about the lengths to which this obsessed man will go to kill this rat.

Any ideas?

EDIT: It is not she short story from the movie Nightmares, before anyone makes that suggestion. This is a full-length movie and it is one rat versus one man.

That's the one!

I had a feeling that of all the people on my f-list, you should be the one to come to my rescue. I searched up and down and in and out of Google and IMDB, and I knew if I just heard it's name I'd recognize it. While I know the movie pretty well enough, I can never for the life of me remember the name of it. So basically if I just remember that it's got RoboCop in it, then I should be able to hunt it down the next time I'm at a loss for the title.

Yeah, I watched that one more than a few times as a child. I think Of Unknown Origin, Alligator, Them!, and (Heaven help me) Night of the Lepus were the animal horror flicks that stuck out best in my mind while growing up. Amazingly enough, I never really watched Jaws, and to this day I'm pretty sure I still haven't seen all of it.

Looking back at IMDB's keywords now that I can pull up the movie by title, I had tried "giant rat" and "animal attack" together, but apparently only "rat" "animal attack" and "giant animal" are listed as keywords for the movie, and you have to get the combination exactly right to filter the search correctly. I even tried "New York" as a keyword, but lo and behold, it is not a part of the keyword listing for this movie. Those bastards.
