Movie review without any spoilers.
This totally hit my Aliens fan-girl nerve. It wasn't your typical shoot-em-up fest, and the focus was story without distracting what-so-ever from the visual elements I've come to expect and appreciate from the Aliens series. - Yes
Michael Fassbender - Not as great as a blonde, but still - Yes
Guy Pearce - Hahaha - No - (You'll have to see the movie to know why)
Charlize Theron - I really wanted to see a lot more out of her character than what the movie was able to portray - she was great, but her character didn't have enough room to move - I was highly disappointed with the treatment of her character.
The characters Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway - Again, there was something pretty flat about the characters. You can tell that there's a lot to work with there, and a lot of hinting at what's going through their minds and their emotional attachment to being the archeologists that they are, but it comes through as generally blah. I can't quite put my finger on why.
Also, Elizabeth Shaw is made of adamantium and is impervious to breaks and bruises. Just saying.
Actually, Michael's character David was the obvious star of the show, and most of the other characters had a lot going for them, but there wasn't enough time to really delve into them. This would make a really great book with lots of back story if someone could tackle it.
The movie works and there's a lot of wonderful elements. I think this would have made an excellent optional 4hr version with more character back stories built in. It would be neat to see some special release like that, although I highly doubt it will ever happen. As regards to the elements, there's still moments when the whole audience knows something bad is coming, but they're still holding their breath in anticipation, and to me, that's a great element for a horror movie. There's still obvious tip-o-the-hat service to Giger, and full credit given to him in the credits for original design.
