This is just to get my desktop back up and running after two weeks now, so I know I could have upgraded everything to a much better level and spent $1k instead of $400 (Mmm 8-core and 64GB, how I drool at thee), but I'm content. I forgot that my year-end bonus and December's bonus checks were manual, and still undeposited, so that's happily covering this build. I really didn't have that to spend right now either, but I'm not in the mood to fight my old motherboard to get it to post and not start overheating again. (If anyone's interested in adopting, I'll post the specs below behind a cut.) Now to hope everything starts up okay.

[I'm using Newegg links just because I know they are going to be more stable and stick around long after the items are discontinued, but I otherwise bought everything at Micro Center in the Dallas/Plano area. The motherboard and processor had a special $40 combo discount applied that I wasn't expecting, so that was nice, and not having to wait for delivery is always worth it.]

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5
AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor (black edition, although I'm not sure if there is a non-black edition of the 6100)
Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory

For now, I'm keeping my 2-SLI GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16, as again, this was an unexpected upgrade, so I'm only piecemealing it for the time being.
