For your class, I would also highly recommend teaching them how to use an abacus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvsnftXXKdw&feature=related). I still only know how to add and subtract on one and just haven't read up on multiplication and division. I own two: a mini wooden Japanese one and a mini metal Chinese one mounted on a slab of marble. Both are about the size of business cards. Once you've shown them the basics, then have them watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbiTEzBk8R8) of the "human calculator".
