Spine Stuff
This past weekend was spent with my head throbbing for most of it. Saturday was spent on the couch listening to Kev's RPG game while I spooled up DMC threads for my upcoming fractal cross stitch project, but I felt pretty miserable and not wanting to move much during those hours. Sunday was a bit better, but I still took off from work for the first half of yesterday, and I was having trouble concentrating through the pain for the second half of the day.
I've had one friend deal with a disc problem in her back over the course of this past year, another acquaintance dealing with a herniated disc in her neck, and both of my parents had disc surgeries when they were about my age. Kevin and I compare notes on our pains on a pretty regular basis. I was looking at pictures of myself from class, and I was noticeably hunched over when I thought I was standing straight. I know I'm getting to the point that I can't keep ignoring my pain. I opted to leave work an hour early and pay a visit to the chiropractor. To my credit, I did decide to see him Saturday, but I was about 1 hour too late when I finally called to see what his hours were.
The straight curve in my neck is now a slight reverse curve. One cervical vertebra has a bone spur and is starting to get seriously misshaped by the pressures in the area. This could cause problems if it starts impending (impaling?) on a nerve. Right now the disc spacing still looks good and intact, but it won't stay that way if I don't start actively working to get the curvature under control. I'm looking at purchasing a cervical posture pump, now that the chiropractor has given it his thumbs up approval. I already have a cervical pillow, but I'm looking into a new pillow a friend recommended. I should also try out those egg crate foam thingies (that's it's official title according to me) and see if that helps before shelling out for an all new mattress.
My lumbar curve looked textbook, which is good news seeing as how I'm constantly trying to use some form of lumbar support. I really just need to work on keeping my shoulders back.
From the front view, my spine has an S-curve in it, which explains the major pain I feel in the mid-back muscles every morning on one side of my body and the periodic muscle spasms I get in that area. This is called a scoliosis curve, although it's not to say I have scoliosis. The curve may be the result of the poor posture I've been having, so getting my shoulders back and neck curve fixed should help. If those get back into alignment and the curve is still present after a bit more time, then we'll look at addressing it more aggressively.
I told Doc about the pain I had been having all weekend. The very first, and loudest crack that he did while adjusting my neck was right smack dab in the middle of where that pain was located on the right side just behind my jaw joint.
