You sound like just the kind of person that either SD or I would LOVE to stumble over in a pub, and immediately fall into a 4 hour conversation with.
Oh- and I am very glad to hear that you are a "bottom up" person. See: I know a little. Have you checked out isotripy yet? She is another 'real life' friend of SD and I, and is doing a degree that you would find very interesting too. I believe that she is going to use her LJ to document her studies this year.
