This is my neuroscientific* take on ESP.
Not because of some mumbo-jumbo song and dance about magical Voodoo soul shit. No, it doesn't exist because it is a misnomer. Extra Sensory Perception cannot exist in the human brain. Let me break it down.
Perception - You either perceive something, or you don't. There's no middle ground. So, at least we can all agree that the entire concept of ESP is based on the idea that someone is perceiving something. Good. Moving on.
Sensory - The brain is a sensory processing machine. Plain and simple. Yes, it works exactly the fuck like a computer program. Input comes in, is translated into data, is processed according to pre-defined** rules, and results in output. There are multitudes of sensory data coming in, and if you think it's limited to 5 senses then you can no longer be my LJ friend. ... Ok, I'll be nice and name another sense - proprioception***. I'm not your hand-holder, so if you haven't heard of it before, you have the internet at you disposal. Go look it up. Look up some of the other senses while you're at it.
Extra - In the world of senses and the brain, there are still probably more than a couple of senses that we just haven't completely come to know. I for one wish there were a hell of a lot more studies done on brain waves. I'm pretty sure that there is a sensory input system somewhere in that brain of ours that is grabbing input in the form of brain waves from everyone else's brain (probably all of the other animal species to some various extent as well). I could go into a diatribe about brain waves and my take on life, death, and abortion, but that's another post for another time.
Just because we haven't discovered all of the senses and rules affecting the brain doesn't mean that those EXTRA senses are magical in any shape, form, or fashion. They're just...misunderstood. Much like the difference between world climate and local weather, we know that there are just some concepts out there that boggle the shit out of some poor souls' minds. The brain is incapable of processing data that didn't come into it as an input. That means that there are receptors of various forms (your nose, your eyes, your Pacini corpuscles) gathering up the input and sending it on to the brain to begin processing. The entire concept that there exists sensory data that just shows up magically in the dark matter spaces between the brain particles and has no way of emerging into the brain as input and data is pure hogwash.
*Like hell that word doesn't exist - if the dictionary recognizes neuropsychiatric as a word, it sure as hell needs to recognize neuroscientific - bitches
**The world has not figured out all of these pre-defined rules. That's why the brain seems so eebee-jeebee mysterious to so many folks. It's the same reason why computers seem so eebee-jeebee to so many of those clueless end-users out there.
***I get such a kick out of the word proprioception. I have no idea why. It's just a fun word to say.
As a side note, I laid down to go to sleep some time around 10:15-10:30pm. I have been wide awake ever since, and the thoughts flowing through my brain has resulted in this post at 2:00am. Yep. This is the kind of torture my brain puts me through. Not the idea of re-hashing and re-thinking about concepts that I've already gone over multiple times in my mind, but the fact that I have to fucking type it out in LJ-land in order for my brain to let it go. Zombie Jesus help me, my brain wants me to become a writer or something. I HATE WRITING!
