The roof
the roof
the roof is on... your car.

*wimpers*

[identity profile] flemco.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's hoping the damage is minimal. *huggers*

[personal profile] lolotehe 2010-02-12 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's good it came down across the sides like that rather than split on the middle of one car. Are the windshields still intact?

I have one of those suction-cup thingies with the handle for pulling dents if you need it.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So far it does look pretty minimal...considering. There are dents on the side panels and a ding in the roof. As long as the frame around the doors is intact and no major scratches (I haven't seen any yet) then I'm looking at what's more or less minor repairs.

The big issue is waiting for the snow to melt and then carefully lifting the roof to get both cars out from underneath. Both cars are currently pinned under the weight of the beams and the cars themselves are preventing the roof form collapsing any further. That's going to be the hard part and hoping no further damage to the cars comes from it.

HUGZ!!!!

Holy crap :(

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, we had seen a smaller carport collapse on the way home from work last night, and I thought about getting a ladder out and clearing off some of the snow from our own, but I was too tired to convey this message to anyone else. :(

The irony

[identity profile] disgruntledgrrl.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Our Apt complex carport did collapse once. I thought we'd avoid this...

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what happens when DFW hits a record snowfall (http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-02-12/dallas-fort-worth-snow-sets-all-kinds-of-records-update1-.html). I know this is a piddly storm compared to up north, but we are totally unprepared for it. Trees, carports, and power lines are just not made to withstand 12in of snow here. Of course, they aren't built to withstand tornadoes either, but at least we know what to expect. *cough*death, destruction, mahem*cough*

[identity profile] jdack.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, it's friggin crazy. The weather pushed everything your guys' way and east, so up here in the pacific northwest it's just raining.

And...

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't have snow plows. So you can only imagine what it was like driving in to work this morning. (Had to get a ride from the roommate who's car was not under the carport)

[identity profile] the-paco.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it inappropriate to buy you the soundtrack to "Bringing Down the House" for the rebuilding/cleanup party?

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So, is that your way of volunteering to help?

[identity profile] lysariala.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
suck :( i keep looking outside to make sure nothing fell on our cars or the roof. all the neighbors have HUGE tree damage. looks like lighning damage more than anything i've seen snow do to trees.

that happened to my parents when i was 6 living in VA.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
VA must have been a cold place. I'm glad I live here, despite our random perils and tornadoes.

[identity profile] the-paco.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
sure, dunno how, though, but I can toss scrap in a bin with the best of them! Do you have to reroof the whole garage or just the carport bit?

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure yet. Everyone was more or less just trying to get to work this morning.

[identity profile] bakersgames.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
That really sucks. Unfortunately you guy's aren't used to snow, as soon as it starts snowing here everyone freaks out about the roof collapsing so usually if we have a house at the time someone is on the roof every few hours pushing off the snow.

That really does suck.

[identity profile] mobobocita.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Will home owner's cover any damages/repairs?

I honestly did not expect this

[identity profile] disgruntledgrrl.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've lived in NORMAL states as well as in Alaska. Houses take snow.

This is as much as surprise me to as the time it rain twice in Phoenix in the same day and I was sent home from work.
Because they don't have gutters on their buildings out there.

I fucking hope so

[identity profile] disgruntledgrrl.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nikki's car actually has a hell of a ding.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I thought about it the night before after seeing a smaller carport collapse, but apparently didn't think about it hard enough. Yeah, it's not something we're used to. A carport blowing off in a tornado, sure, but not caving in from snow.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
If it doesn't, I did get comprehensive for the car when I bought it. I gradually knock things off of insurance once a car is paid off and gotten more wear into it. But for a new car like that one, I keep it fully insured.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and there should be enough people kicking in for a new, better, faster, stronger carport if insurance doesn't cover the collapse.

[identity profile] mobobocita.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
It *really* should, it's just a matter of how bad the deductible is...

[identity profile] my-window-seat.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
You can rebuild. You have the technology.

Seriously, though - I am so sorry for your roof woes. I hope you can free your car and fix it up purty again real soon.

*HUG*

Re: I honestly did not expect this

[identity profile] bakersgames.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Houses take snow, they are much more solid, however carports are not as good at taking the weight, we see carports lost due to rain on flat roofs, let alone snow.

[identity profile] trickykitty.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sunday will probably be the "bringing down the roof" party, and you are most definitely invited.

Oooo hey you can make waffles!

*bats puppy eyes*

I'm sorry - while I'm teaching on the weekends and working during the week, I have only one day off to get stuff done. I have a LOT of stuff to get done today, and I'm just going to have to pick a few things and the rest, as usual, won't get done. I'm sorry!
