I guess I fell into the trap of the frog in the pot of heated water. I saw Woot go from one web page to a couple. I like shirt.woot and have bought lots of shirts. I thought wine.woot was odd. Then there was sellout.woot, which was kind of annoying, because it brought other markets into the fold. However, home.woot, kids.woot, electronics.woot, computers.woot, and tools&garden.woot were still spot on. It was when the pages started offering "groups" of items on a single page that I really noticed a major change from the One-Item-Per-Day paradigm that attracted me to Woot in the first place. Even shirt.woot now tends to offer groups of shirts that didn't place in the top three during their derby contests. (What's the point of the derby contest if you're ultimately going to offer all entries for sale anyway?)
I was unaware that Woot had been bought out by Amazon a while back, but now that I know that, all the changes it's undergone have made sense. I was starting to realize how much time and effort I was spending going through all the websites and group listings on Woot, and wondering how to change my behavior so that I wasn't aimlessly spending money and time on stuff I didn't really want. I had fallen down a rabbit hole that was eating away at what time I have to spend socializing and working and becoming a better member of the non-consumerist society.
All that being said, I have found the answer I didn't know I was seeking. In case you haven't heard, the original creators of Woot have gone back to their root beginnings and have created meh. which again only offers one item per day.
No sooner did I set up meh as a daily toolbar link, I suddenly have lost all urge to view all of those other sale webpages offered by Woot. I still have shirt.woot as a bookmark, but I look at the shirt and move on, versus previously looking at the shirt, scrolling down, perusing the other links, clicking on those to look at their grouped items, etc.
meh has saved my life. I now am a full woman who knows where my shopping dollars belong. I have regained my lifeless hours in the dizzying maze of online shopping. I am a free woman.
