Constructive Meme Day
Okay, the rules are simple. ... it's up to everyone who wants to participate to recommend a retailer that most people have never heard of who offers something strange, wonderful, or incredibly useful items or services, and tell the rest of the world why you do business with these folks.
Here's one that's not really a small company, but it dwarfs in comparison to mall anchors and Target/Wal-Mart types, and not many people I know consider going there, so I want to recommend them.
Syms for every-day, formal wear, coats, shoes, purses/wallets, gloves and hats.
Take *shudders* Ross with it's idea of categorizing outlet clothes by size, now actually take the time to put the clothes on hangers or nicely fold them into cubbies, tag them so that you can easily and quickly tell the size of an item, make sure that they are brand-name pretty clothes and not whore-on-the-corner clothes, widen the walk spaces so a wheelchair or two could get through, sleek up the place with basic black and white paint and furniture, make all of your employees wear honest-to-goodness business-wear and teach them to be helpful but non-intrusive, and throw a Wal-Mart price tag on everything. And you get Syms. They also have a great selection of formal wear/prom dresses and suits/tux's and have a tailor on staff who can help fit you.
Another recommendation, for both good popcorn and novelty popcorn gifts is The Poppin' Place. It's a little hole in the wall in Hurst that took over an old gas station back when I was a baby. They have a crazy assortment of popcorn flavors - I personally think the Rum Butter Toffee is to die for. They sell an assortment of tins that changes out regularly and will refill any tin you have with up to three different flavors.
If you are ever in the mid-cities area, there's a family-owned all-you-can-eat pizza franchise called Pizza Garden which rivals CiCi's Pizza, but without all the loud tv's and arcade sounds. The owner started off as a Snappy Tomato, but I don't know the story as to why he changed names. What I do know is that they started off small on the other side of the shopping center, changed names, and then soon moved to the other side of the shopping center into a space that is easily 3-5 times what he had before. It was definitely needed as they were starting to get really busy and pretty cramped when we went. We're glad to see him grow and really like his ranch/veggie pizza. He and his employees (mostly all high-schoolers) are very friendly and really treat you like you're at home when you walk in the door. We used to see the owner of the Poppin' Place (above) there just about every Friday night, as that's also about how often we used to go as well. So you never know, you might get a "star" sighting.
(I'll add more places if I think of them.)
