The Middle Eastern culture must really not like OCD people. If they did, then they would not subject me to such a great recipe that calls for dealing with thousands of little things called sesame seeds.
I have successfully made a batch of hummus after wrestling with the sesame seeds to make the tahini sauce ingredient. I also ran up the street and purchased a batch of hummus from the Medi restaurant we know and love. I have both Target-bakery-made pita bread and restaurant pita bread.
Both batches of hummus have been put into two of the same bowls and the pita bread will be put on different plates.
Restaurant:
One batch of hummus + 4 pitas (2 orders of 2) + tax = 6.39
Target:
(most items I already had on hand, but this is just an estimate of the cost)
4 bakery-made pitas = 1.99
1-15.5oz can chickpeas/garbonzo beans = .80
2 cloves garlic = .10 (although I cheat and buy a small jar of pre-minced garlic - which I already had)
3.3 oz. jar sesame seeds = 2.09 (which made 2-3 batches of the amount of tahini I needed)
~~.70 for one batch of hummus
1/4 cup olive oil = .50 (from a 25oz jar costing $6 total)
lemon juice and salt I already had on hand, and most people do as well
TOTAL = 4.09
Forcing my roommates into a blind taste test of some of my food preparation:
PRICELESS
