Mar. 15th, 2007 10:45 amWhy must people always be so god-damned asinine and stubborn when logic is staring them right in the face?
We just hired a new girl to work at the customer service desk. The current schedule is GirlA 8:30a-12noon, desk closed noon-1p so GirlA can take a lunch, GirlA 1-2p, GirlB 2-5p, Me 5-6:30p. The only reasons I'm on the desk during the times that I am is because they are too cheap to pay an additional person to cover those hours and that is the busiest time of the day and I'm the most capable of handling it. However, it's TOO busy and I can only barely handle it and I don't get any of my regular bookkeeping job done during that time. The Business Manager who is in charge of the desk was mentioning to the Exec yesterday that with summer approaching and the desk getting busier, it's really not feasible to close the desk during that noon hour. I happened to think about it and came up with a perfectly good solution which got shot on its ass in 5 seconds flat.
Have GirlA work 8:30a-1p, Me 1-3:30p, and GirlB 3:30-6:30p. GirlB has already said that she has no commitments preventing her from working until 6:30. GirlA just said "Hell Yeah" to the idea of getting off work at 1 instead of 2. There would actually be two (count them TWO) staff available to handle customers at the desk during that busy time, as I will always be called up when it gets busy. I will actually be able to get some work done during the 1.5 hour shift since noon is nowhere near as busy as the evening, thereby actually increasing my overall productivity.
The Bus Mgr's response, "Well, I'll have to take it to the Exec to see, but I just don't know. I only have 15 hours to work with." *blink, blink* Not once in all of that description did I change the budget, but actually increased the "effective" number of hours worked by adding time to my own schedule. I also created schedules that both GirlA and myself would be much more content to work.
